April is National Poetry Month and our town, our county is abuzz with poetry events, readings, and books of poetry from local and national authors. Tonight, local poet/playwright/actress/ songstress, Carolyn MCCarthy entertains guests at "A Taste for Poetry" a gala fundraiser for the Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest. All the poetry submissions are in and members of the Boynton Committee (including me) met Saturday to create the display boards that hold every one of the 287 poems submitted to this year's contest. The poems are on display at the Bellingham Public Library and then will be moved to the Ferry Terminal for the Awards Ceremony on May 10. Twenty-five winning poets - between the ages of 5 and 85 - will read their winning entries to a receptive crowd in our very poetry oriented community.
I have asked a number of poets about their poetic "voice." What is it? How would you describe it? How was it discovered? Who or what wants to speak through you? I was asking because I was wondering about my own poetic voice and asking those same questions of myself. Not easy questions to answer as most of my poet friends said to me. Not easy for me to answer either. So I put the question to you. What is your poetic voice? That assumes we all have one which I believe is true. How would your describe yours? How do you express through poetry or art or music or gardening or any number of avenues that which wants to come through you? Are you willing to give your unique voice free rein? Maybe a beginning point is to consider your life in the light of poetic expression - the work you do, the people you love, the places that inspire you, the moments that left an imprint upon you. These elements make up the "you" who is expressing in this life, the only life you've been given. I'd love to hear your voice! |
