Chautauqua Craftsmen and Artists of the Black Hills
Chautauqua Artisans Market is established as a thriving art destination in the Southern Hills
And changes for me in 2017
It has been an honor for me to serve as a founding director of Chautauqua Craftsmen and Artists of the Black Hills, Inc. 2016 was a phenomenally successful year, much better than our board and participating artisits anticipated. CCABH provides a venue for local and regional artists, offers a variety of classes, and has received contributions from donors and matching campaigns and grants. We have hosted a number of nationally and internationally known artists along with our local "stars" and have exciting exhibits and gallery shows planned for 2017. Featured in Trip Advisor for 2016, put Chautauqua on your list of "Must Visit" in 2017.
As 2016 was winding down, I decided to leave the Board of Directors as an active director and move to advisory status. I also have chosen to withdraw my inventory from CCABH's Marketplace. I have other endeavors in mind for 2017 that require more focus and a reduction in my out in the world activity. Writing is calling. More travel. Probably both. I bid a very fond farewell to all that was so fulfilling in 2016 to make space for all that is yet to be in 2017.

Just 5 months after opening our doors, we have 35 artist participants offering a wide variety of art expressions.
In our gallery, we have featured Franz Brown, Beulah Donnell, The Southern Hills Artists, and currently are featuring "Hogs in the Hills" in recognition of the 76th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. As our newspaper announced this week, this is our "most edgy, eclectic, eccentric show to date. Experience a wide range of whimsy and fantasy presented in photos, fiber, paint and steel!"
Our Black Hills community has been so welcoming and supportive. We have received generous donations from our local businesses, patrons of the arts, and charitable organizations. We have hosted Chamber of Commerce mixers, the Spring Wine Walk, and open meetings for participants and interested community members. We have logged thousands of volunteer hours and activities. Thank you, thank you!
This fall we are offering classes in textiles, photography, soap making, wood working, painting and creative writing. Check the calender on our website: www.chautauquacraftsmen.org or facebook: Chautauqua Artisans Market.
We are growing! We hope you will come visit us and support our work by spreading the word, contributioning time and money, joining in as a participating artist, serving on the Board of Directors. New ideas are always welcome!

Our location in an historic sandstone building directly across from our Visitor Center in the old train depot is ideal. Floor to ceiling windows give an excellent peek into our interior where all of our hand-crafted items are displayed boutique style. Fall River runs the length of town, just behind the Visitor Center. Kidney Springs Gazebo, a true mineral spring watering hole, and the picturesque river falls are kitty corner from us along the walking trail that follows the river. Our world renowned warm mineral waters are the focus ofour unique culture and "soak in" is the theme Hot Springs businesses have adopted. At Chautauqua, we invite you to soak in the arts!
Artists and craftspeople who are part of Chautauqua create beautiful and unique pieces including bead work; silverware jewelry, mobiles, etc; weavings; wall hangings; oil, acrylic and water color paintings; glassworks; gemstone jewelry; wooden game boards and cutting boards; knitted and crocheted scarves and gloves and hats; hand dyed woolen ponchos; pottery; lotions and soaps; and the list goes on. I am a participating artist and my framed photographs, poem & photo greeting cards and my poetry book "untying the web" are all on display and for sale. Most of our artists are working in the showroom on a rotating basis, and are happy to visit with our guests and visitors.
We are hosting featured artists from Hot Springs and the surrounding region. Franz Brown is our featured artist for March and April. Franz has large paintings hung in our spacious showroom and smaller works in our artists gallery. March 29 from 1-3 pm and again from 5-7 pm, come and meet Franz, view his collection and listen to his video presentation about his exhibit, his inspiration, and his collaborative plans for a new series featuring Lakota culture and art.
A water color artist will be featured in May and June, our summertime and motorcycle rally themes are already in the planning. We are working with elementary students and will be featuring student art throughout the year. We love to visit with artistis and crafters about future exhibits and suggestions. We will hold a variety of classes in our classroom area including painting, knitting, weaving, photography and writing and whatever we can dream and teach! We invite your ideas.
As a non-profit, we have a competent Board of Directors managing the day to day operations and making present and long-range plans. Terry Slagel is President, Phyllis Boernke (that's me) Vice President/Secretary, Rhonda Kocourek is Treasurer, Christine Heidebrink and Linda Pokorski are Directors. Our over-arching goal is to enhance and increase art involvement and appreciation throughout the Black Hills and beyond. We host community events, fundraisers and classes and support well established and emerging artists. As a Chamber member, we are holding a Chamber mixer from 5-7 pm on March 17th, the same day as our Grand Opening from 10 am to 5 pm. All are welcome! If you wish to be added to our email list to keep track of shows, classes and events, if you are interested in being on the Board of Directors, or assisting in a variety of volunteer opportunites, please contact us by email. Your financial contributions are always welcome!
