Return to Difficult Day....

9/7/2023

What was I saying so long ago? That difficult day that I was referring to was actually a difficult year that began in late 2021 and seemed to never end till late 2022. I'll summarize rather than drag out into a whole novel about 2022! So the difficult year.....

A series of mishaps began with very aggressive physical therapy, better suited to high school athletes than post-stroke senior ladies. This put me in the hospital with fractured tibia and ankle. The hospital sent me home with a wheelchair and instructions for complete bedrest for 6 weeks. (No cheating, TOTAL bedrest!) Once released to continue care with a different therapist, I was reinjured there and put back on bedrest for another 6-8 weeks. Then a fall, more bedrest. During this time, I had a series of infections and had to take 3 rounds of antibiotics plus antivirals combined with - you guessed it - bedrest! After being on bedrest for more than half the year, taking powerful medications and seeing more doctors and therapists than I would ever wish on anybody, I ended 2022 trying to regain strength and balance and learning to walk again with a walker. Finally 2022 ended and we went straight into 2023 to catch covid.  Sounds like a repeat of 2022? No. It gets better and we can move ahead to new cycles, new ventures, a new home......

But that's for the next time....

I almost hesitated to "like" your last blog post Phyllis since that summarization included minutes, hours, days, weeks, and months of pain, frustration, uncertainty, more pain, and ultimately a measure of healing. Having been on similar journeys, with less roadblocks and of shorter duration than yours, I know that it is very hard to keep going. . . there are times it is difficult, at least for me, to find much gratitude in the whole experience. From a perspective of years, not a matter of a few months like you, insights do spring forth. Thank you for sharing the less attractive parts of what has been an arduous journey that have seen both backslides and improvements. The whole process takes on new meanings and color when we are aware of both the ups and the downs of what we have faced.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments Sue. You’re so right that at times it’s hard to keep going. And it is more truthful to tell both sides of the story - both the ups and the downs - because we all do experience both sides during our life’s journey. As Ram Dass said “We’re all just walking each other home. “
